The Artist
Sarah Lugton creates contemporary, dynamic, abstract paintings from her studio gallery in Williamstown North, land of the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin nation. Her compositions are rhythmic gestural movements across canvas, full of texture, depth and colour. Her work creates a visual language that conveys emotion and meaning, connecting us on a shared journey of the human condition.
Sarah is an intuitive painter who describes the process of mark making on canvas as “flowing through her rather than from her”. Nostalgic memories, personal experiences, music, literature and people in her life fuel her work. She internalises these aspects of her life and imbues them with meaning and emotion. She then translates these onto canvas with layers of colour and movement with gestural brushstrokes. Remnants of her life influences can sometimes be seen in elusive shapes and patterns in her work, creating a symbolic language, a personal dialogue between you and her. Sarah hopes to create an intimacy in her work where you feel drawn in and see a part of yourself reflected in the work.
Sarah’s process is instinctive and spontaneous with the work revealing itself over time. The final composition is not known at the outset of a new work. With this in mind her work does imbue hidden signs and symbols of inspiration from her life, such as an abstract flower motif from her days gardening or a reoccurring trilliant shape connected to her career as a jeweller. These reveal themselves throughout the painting process and are not a conscious decision by Sarah. She hopes that you can connect and assign your own meaning to her work through contemplation of its elements, composition and colour.
As a mother of two small girls, Sarah paints while they are napping or at Kindergarten. Her children are the reason for following her dream and creating an arts practice that is passionate, viable and purpose-driven. She sees herself as a role model for them, leading by example that you can “Break though the overgrowth to create your own path, rather than following the yellow-brick road”.
Sarah has spent many years learning and mastering different mediums and techniques in the world of arts. She has a curiosity and passion for making. For several years she made precious jewellery collections as a professionally trained jeweller, trained as a potter at a small arts school to create ceramic tableware, vases and objects through hand-building and wheel-throwing clay and various workshops and short courses such as weaving tapestries and other worn adornments. Sarah has also been a highly qualified teacher for many years.
